Candle care, wick trimming and better burns.

You have found a candle you love. The scent is exactly right, the vessel is beautiful, and the first time you lit it the whole room changed.

The last thing you want is for it to burn unevenly, tunnel through the middle, or disappear in a week.

Caring for a candle properly is not complicated, but a few small habits make an enormous difference to how long it lasts, how well it burns, and how much scent it releases.

This guide covers everything you need to know, from the moment you light a candle for the first time to knowing when it is time to stop and what to do with the vessel afterwards.

The first burn rule and why it matters

The first burn is the most important burn your candle will ever have. Get this right and the rest follows naturally.

Candle wax has memory. The first time you light a candle, the wax melts outward from the wick. If you extinguish it before the melt pool has reached the full diameter of the vessel, the wax will only ever melt to that same diameter in future burns, leaving a ring of unmelted wax around the edges. This is called tunnelling, and it wastes a significant amount of your candle.

For your first burn, allow the candle to burn until the entire surface has melted, edge to edge. Depending on the size of your candle, this can take anywhere from one to three hours. Do not blow it out early.

After this first burn, every subsequent burn will be more even, more efficient, and more fragrant.

Trimming your wick every time

Before you light a candle - every single time - trim the wick to approximately 5mm. This is the single most effective thing you can do for a better burn.

An untrimmed wick burns hotter and faster, produces more soot, and can cause the flame to flicker or mushroom at the top. A 5mm wick gives you a clean, stable flame that melts the wax evenly and releases fragrance gradually rather than all at once.

You can use a dedicated wick trimmer, a pair of nail scissors, or simply pinch off the tip of the wick with your fingers once the candle has cooled completely. Never trim a wick while the candle is still warm.

The right surface to burn on

Place your candle on a flat, heat-resistant surface that will not move. A ceramic plate, a stone coaster, or a wooden tray all work well. Avoid placing candles directly on soft furnishings, near curtains, or on surfaces that can warp or discolour with heat.

Keep your candle away from draughts. Open windows, fans, and air conditioning units all affect the flame. A draught causes uneven burning, excessive flickering, and can push the flame toward one side of the vessel, melting the wax unevenly. If you notice your flame leaning consistently in one direction, there is a draught nearby.

Avoiding tunnelling

If tunnelling has already started, you can see a well forming around the wick while unmelted wax remains on the sides. There are a few ways to correct it.

The most effective is to wrap a piece of foil loosely around the top of the candle, leaving a small opening above the wick. Light the candle and allow it to burn for one to two hours. The foil traps heat and helps the outer wax melt back into the pool. Remove the foil carefully, let the candle cool, and check whether the surface has levelled.

For future burns, always follow the first burn rule and allow the melt pool to reach the edges before extinguishing.

How to store your candle

Candles are sensitive to light and temperature. Direct sunlight can fade the colour of a candle, soften the wax, and in extreme cases cause a candle to warp in its vessel. Keep candles away from windowsills, hot surfaces, and anywhere temperatures fluctuate significantly.

If you are not burning a candle regularly, store it in a cool, dry place with the lid on. This protects the fragrance from evaporating and keeps dust off the surface. Most well-made candles will hold their scent for up to a year if stored correctly.

When to stop burning and what to do with the jar

Stop burning your candle when approximately 1cm of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel. Burning below this level risks overheating the vessel and, in glass containers, can cause cracking.

When you reach this point, do not throw the jar away.

If you would like to clean out the jar yourself first, place it in the freezer for two hours. The remaining wax will contract and pop out cleanly. Wipe the inside with a paper towel, then wash with warm soapy water. The vessel can be reused as a pen holder, a small plant pot, a desk organiser, or returned to us for our refill programme.
